 Insomnia 

Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which you experience difficulty sleeping or staying asleep. This means you are not sleeping as you should.


 Generally, an adult is supposed to sleep for like 7-9 hours in every 24 hours depending on the age. Getting enough sleep is vital for your overall health. Insomnia disrupt how much sleep a person get.


Insomnia could be short term(acute) or it could last for a long time(chronic)

 It is acute when it last for 1 night to a few weeks. It is chronic when it happens at least 3 night a week for 3 months or more.


 Symptoms of Insomnia 

  • Having trouble sleeping 
  • Feeling tired, unwell and sleepy during the day
  • Mood disruption especially anxiety 
  • Slow thought processes and having trouble concentrating 
  • Low motivation or energy 
  • Lack of coordination and rash action 


Causes of insomnia 

  • Genetics: Sleep trait and condition like insomnia seems to run in the family


  • Stress: Stressful or difficult situations may contribute to insomnia 


  • Using of certain medications like cocaine:  Frequent cocaine may lead of change in sleep schedule causing insomnia 


  • Certain medical condition: certain medical condition such as asthma, depression and even cancer can cause insomnia


  • Life changes: Temporary or long term  changes also affects your sleep, like sleeping in an unfamiliar place, adjusting to a new work schedule or moving to a new home or location 


Sleep derivation can increase the risk of 

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Diabetic 
  • Obesity 
  • Depression 
  • High blood pressure 


Treatment 

  • Establishing a regular sleep schedule 
  • Avoiding stimulant like caffeine 
  • Mental health care
  • In some cases, medications such as sleeping pills may be prescribed
