            Depression 

  Depression is a common mental disorder that causes long term sadness and loss of interest in things or activities you once enjoyed.

  Depression can cause difficulties in how one think,act and even sleep. It is different from normal mood changes and it can affect every aspect of one’s life.

   There are different types of depressive disorder.

    1.Major depression 

This type of depression interferes with daily activities,because it leads to loss of interest in activities for at least two weeks.

    2.Dysthymia

Also called persistent depression. This type of depression last for a very long time. It consists of less severe depression symptoms.

   3.Prenatal and postpartum depression 

Prenatal depression occurs during pregnancy and postpartum depression occurs within 4weeks of child bearing.

   4.Depression due to another medical condition

Some medical condition creates changes In the body that causes depression. Example of such medical condition are heart disease and cancer.

   Symptoms of depression 

  1. Loss of interest in pleasure or activities that was formally a hobby.
  2. Anxiety, guilt, frustration and sadness.
  3. Trouble remembering things.
  4. Trouble concentrating.
  5. Suicidal thinking.
  6. Sleep disturbance (insomnia)or sleeping too much.
  7. Having low energy or fatigue. 

     Causes of depression 

        Genetics : Depression is more common to people whose blood relatives also have the same condition.

    Medical condition : Chronic medical condition like cancer, heart disease and sickle cell can lead to depression.

    Brain chemistry : when there is an imbalance of Neurotransmitters( naturally occurring brain chemicals) it may leas to depression.

     Environmental factors: such as trauma can also cause depression.

                 Depression management 

  1. Brain stimulation therapy: This therapy helps people with severe depression.
  2. Exercising regularly.
  3. Medication: prescribed medication like antidepressants can help manage depression.
  4. Avoid taking alcohol .
  5. Psychotherapy: this is a one to one therapy. In this therapy the therapist identifies and help to changes certain behavior or thoughts.  

Depression has no cure but can be managed. Seek a therapist immediately.
